Jalandhar: A day after he was denied ticket by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), sitting MLA from Kartarpur and former Jail Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur on Thursday resigned from the party and was likely to join Congress in Chandigarh. Phillaur also resigned from the primary membership of the SAD.
Though MLA Sarwan Singh Phillaur preferred to remain mum on his further political move but sources maintained that he was likely to join Congress along with a group of Akali workers. It was learnt that MLA Sarwan Singh Phillaur was joining congress on the condition of contesting from Phillaur assembly seat, which he has represented five times in a row.
MLA Phillaur resigned from the SAD after the party fielded new entrant, ex-congress leader Seth Sat Pal Mal from Kartarpur. A dalit leader, the ex-SAD MLA was already sidelined by the Akali leadership after his name cropped up prominently in the multi crore drugs mafia in Punjab following which he lost cabinet rank and remained off the field till date.
It is pertinent to mention here that the six-time MLA Sarwan Singh Phillaur was asked to resign by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in May 2014 after which he was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED also summoned Damanvir Singh Phillaur, the son of Sarwan Singh in connection with the drugs mafia case repeatedly in the past two year.
While MLA Phillaur kept a low profile after resigning as a minister in the SAD-BJP government, Damanvir Singh remained vocal against a section of the Akali leadership particularly Punjab Transport Minister Ajit Singh Kohar and MLA Avinash Chander. In a recent statement, Damanvir went upto the extent of saying that if his father could resign as Jail minister, why not MLA Avinash Chander, whose name also emerged in the drugs mafia. Avinash Chander was also summoned by the ED along with his family by the ED sleuths in the recent past.
Sources also maintained that SAD party leadership was wary of the growing trouble between Damanvir, his father MLA Sarwan Singh and Ajit Singh Kohar. Now, SAD has again fielded Ajit Singh Kohar from Shahkot assembly constituency while repeatedly overlooked Akali leader Sarwan Singh Phillaur’s fate was imminent, party sources said.
