Hoshiarpur: A week after two jail inmates committed suicide, Hoshiarpur Police and jail authorities on Tuesday conducted a raid in Hoshiarpur Central Jail and seized mobile phone, SIM cards and tobacco from the possession of three jail inmates. Police also recovered two parcels from the possession of the jail inmates containing ‘Biri’ and ‘tobacco’ bundles in it.
The police acted on a tip off that four persons had thrown a parcel inside the jail premises from tower number 2 of the central jail. After getting the information, a team of police and jail authorities conducted a raid in barrack number 21 of the jail and seized a mobile charger from a dustbin. The mobile charger was seized from the possession of one Ajay Kumar, against whom a case was registered by the police. He was already facing many cases and was lodged in the jail.
Hoshiarpur Central Jail Superintendent Vikramjit Singh Panthe said that they recovered a mobile phone and SIM card from the possession of two other jail inmates namely Hardyal Singh, a resident of Lakhimpur village in Ferozepur district and Rajinder Singh alias Lotta from Khanaura village. “A case against four unidentified persons was registered by the police,” he said.
It is pertinent to mention here that two jail inmates namely Surinder Pal alias Sonu, a resident of Khanaura village and Sunil from Hukumatpur had committed suicide inside their barrack on February 11, after which the police authorities were keeping a close vigil on the jail. District Magistrate Anindita Mitra had immediately ordered an inquiry into the incident. Interestingly, it is not the first incident, when mobile phones, SIM cards, chargers and narcotics were recovered from the jail inmates.
Jail security has always remained under scanner, as reports of jail inmates, including notorious criminals have been found using smart phones and updating their status and videos on social media site- Facebook. The recent past saw some of the bloody gang wars taking place in Punjab, which were hatched by notorious criminals sitting inside the four walls of the jail barracks.
