Bathinda: The police on Monday claimed to have nabbed two prime members of an inter-district gang of highway dacoits and looters active in Bathinda, Faridkot, Moga, Barnala and Ferozepur districts. This gang, as reported, was involved in extortion, dacoity, murder, possession of illegal arms, and snatchings. Bathinda range DIG Yurinder Singh flanked by SSP Swapan Sharma said that a cash van (Innova) of OBC Bank branch, Moga, which was heading to Bagha Purana, was intercepted and Rs 60 lakh looted by this gang on May 23.
The police officials said that a case was registered against Ankush Mutneja of Jalalabad, who was allegedly harbouring Gagandeep and his friends. . The SSP, Swapan Sharma, said that following information about their movement, four police teams were formed to raid the spot.Manpreet Singh of Butter Kalan and Lovepreet Singh of Lakha were arrested on the spot from whom two .32-bore pistols, 20 rounds were recovered. Gagandeep, Navdeep and Nikku managed to flee the spot, claimed the police. During interrogation Lovepreet and Manpreet admitted that their gang looted Rs 6.5 lakh from bank van in Jaito, Rs 60 lakh from OBC Bank cash van in Moga, snatched a Verna car near thermal station in Bathinda and used the same car in Moga cash van dacoity and then fled the spot. A team of Chandigarh police also accompanied the raiding party.
Four of the same gang held on June 7
On June 7, the Moga police had claimed to have arrested four members of the same gang with a mention that the two major robberies carried out in the month of May in Moga and Faridkot districts, including the one involving Rs 60 lakh, were solved with their arrest. Moga police had recovered Rs 7.5 lakh and two weapons along with a car from them. The four were identified as Jagraj Singh of Buttar Kalan village, Baljinder Singh of Rajeana village, Rinku also of Rajeana and Ranjeet Singh of Veroke village in Moga.
