Chandigarh: The National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Mohali, and Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Ludhiana, have joined hands to work on crop improvement by using biotechnological tools.
Both the institutions have mutually agreed upon collaborative areas such as crop improvement using biotechnological tools in wheat, vegetables and fruit crops.
A team of scientists led by Dr TR Sharma, Executive Director, NABI, Mohali and met Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, Ludhiana, and his team comprising Director of Research, Heads and Scientists of different departments on the issue in Ludhiana on Wednesday.
The experts hold discussion for exploring possibilities of collaborative research for enhancement of nutritional value of various agricultural products, processing of agricultural and horticultural produces and use of nano-technology in agriculture.
Presentations on various ongoing research activities, areas of strength and probable areas of collaborations were made by scientists of both the institutes. Dr TR Sharma, who is also former Director National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology, delivered a lecture on “Cloning and Characterization of Genes and their Application in Rice Improvements – A Success Story”, under the aegis of Ludhiana Chapter of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS). Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Dr AS Nanda, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU, and NAAS Fellows attended the lecture along with all Deans, Directors, faculty and students of the university.
Dr Sharma presented the research work on identification, gene cloning, validation and characterization of the rice blast resistance gene Pi54 ultimately leading to its commercial utilization by the development of rice varieties carrying this gene.
The lecture entailed the work carried out by Dr Sharma and his team over the last two decades which is a beautiful example of basic research leading to an applied product. Dr Dhillon appreciated the speaker and encouraged PAU faculty and students to work systematically and contribute to the overall upliftment of the society.
