Nawanshahr: Sandhu Nursing Institute, Nawanshahr in collaboration with the Punjabi Academy, Delhi organised a one day national seminar on female foeticide here on Saturday. Jarnail Singh, MLA and Vice Chairman, Punjabi Academy, Delhi was the chief guest and Dr. S.S. Nijhar, President Shiv Kumar Batalvi Art and Culture Association, Batala was the guest of honour.
Intellectuals from different sectors – health, literature, education and NGOs, students and delegates from nursing and medical institutes participated in the seminar. In his welcome address, Dr. DPS Sandhu ( Former Director Health Services, Punjab) , director, Sandhu Institute of Nursing, said that the seminar on female foeticide in collaboration with the Punjabi Academy, Delhi, was planned to involve the intellectuals / literary personalities to convert the fight against female foeticide into a social movement.
” When the PNDT Act was enacted, I was the Director Health Services, Punjab and I had consistently been stressing that it was a social problem and could not be tackled by merely enacting laws”, said Dr. Sandhu adding that the sole responsibility of implementing PNDT Act to check female foeticide was being put on the health department. ” In fact, the solution of the problem lies in bringing the change in the mind set of the society”, further said Dr. Sandhu, adding that the NGOs, intellectuals and literary personalities could play vital role in it.
Principal of Sandhu Institute, Inderpreet Kaur unfolded the theme and a documentary on female foeticide was presented. Two sessions of symposium were held. The first session was presided over by Jaspal Singh Gidda, founder General Secretary of UPKAR Coordination Society, Nawanshahr, which has brought district Nawanshahr on the national map in curbing the skewed sex ratio. Dr. Sanjiv Sharma ( Jalandhar), dr. Samriti Arora ( assistant Professor, Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi), Prof.
Radha Saini ( RN, Fellow UICC, Geneva) read their papers on ” Female Foeticide : issues in Health Care Sector”, ” Legal Issues related to Female Foeticide and Nursing responsibilities”, Female Foeticide : Beliefs and Facts” respectively. The second session was presided over by Dr. Kamaljit Singh ( Assistant Professor, Delhi University, New Delhi and Editor Samdarshi). Dr. Rajinder Singh ( Bathinda), Dr. Jatinder Singh ( Chandigarh) read their papers on “Female Foeticide : historical and Ideological Perspectives”.
Jarnail Singh, Vice Chairman, Punjabi Academy, Delhi, said that the Academy had started holding seminars to sensitise people about the alarming social problems like female foeticde and drug addiction in Punjab. The semninars are aimed at mobilising people from all sections of the society to launch concerted and consistent efforts to convert the fight against social evils into mass movement.
The literary persons and artists should abstain from penning down / picturisation of songs glorifying use of intoxicants and derogatory projection of women. Chetan Mohan Joshi, Raghuvir Singh ( Guru Nanak Mission International Charitable Trust, Nawangran-Kulpur), D.P.Randhawa, Advocate and Senator, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Dr. Mohinderjit Kaur Sandhu, Silvia Sandhu, Gurinder Kaur Gill, Sonia, Poonam, Ramandeep Kaur, among others, also addressed the seminar. The students presented a choreography.
