Jalandhar: Perhaps, in a first of its kind case, a newly married Constable posted at Lohian Khas police station has shot off a letter to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shahkot seeking 10-day leave to decide whether to ‘commit suicide or not’ as he was said to be not happy with his marriage.
Constable Angrej Singh (1572) got married on December 4, last Sunday. He hails from Zira town of Ferozepur district and was currently on leave. Daily Post is in possession of the letter written in Punjabi and mentioning the subject as ‘10-day leave.’ The letter was addressed to DSP, Shahkot, Jaswinder Singh and signed by SHO Avtar Singh and the Constable.
In the letter, Constable Angrej Singh wrote in Punjabi: “Benti hai ki, meri zindagi de maade din (marriage) December 4, 2016 nu shuru ho gaye han. Jis karke mera jana bahut jaruri hai. Es layi meharbani karke mainu 10-din di chutti diti jawe ji. Mai soch saka ki ‘Atam Hatya’ (Suicide) karni hai ja nahi. Aap ji da ati dhanwadi hovanga ji.” (It is requested that my bad days (marriage) started on December 4, as a result of which I have to go. It is my humble request to grant me 10-day leave, so that I can decide whether to commit suicide or not. I will be highly thankful to you.)
Though the Jalandhar Rural Police was tight lipped about the letter and its contents, DSP Jasvir Singh said: “I am yet to get the letter. It must have been addressed to SHO Lohian and then it will reach me.” SHO Lohian Avtar Singh first expressed ignorance about the letter but later said that Constable Angrej Singh was on leave for marriage. The SHO kept reiterating that it was an application for marriage leave and he was on leave for around 15-day.
However, when pointed out that the letter carried his and Constable Angrej Singh’s signature, the SHO said, “Kindly, pass on the letter to me. We would verify the contents of the letter.” Meanwhile, repeated attempts to trace Constable Angrej Singh turned futile. Lohian Police remained on their toes to keep the incident as a well-guarded secret. Interestingly, SHO Lohian provided a mobile number later in the day, which turned out to be fake.
