Chandigarh: Punjab Congress vice president and chief spokesperson Sunil Jakhar on Monday questioned the purpose of calling special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha when the earlier law passed unanimously in March last is yet to get the Governor’s approval.
Asserting that the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was trying to befool the people of Punjab by enacting the drama of special session, Jakhar asked Badal that he should first get the law denotifying the SYL land approved by the Governor. “Otherwise, it is clear that you are trying to befool the people of Punjab as you have no genuine intentions to save our water,” he said.
Defending his party’s decision of mass resignations, the former CLP leader said, Congress has always been supportive of any move of the government that would save Punjab’s waters. He pointed out, when the Vidhan Sabha passed the law to denotify the SYL land, Congress supported it unconditionally.
However, the PCC Chief Spokesperson added, Badal had no intentions to get it approved from the Governor as he took two days to take the bill to the Governor. “Your intentions were suspect then and your intentions are suspect now as well as you only want to befool people without any intent or will to save our waters,” he said, while adding, when Capt Amarinder passed the Termination of Agreements Act in 2004, he got the Governor’s approval within few hours only.
Asking Badal as why he did not use his good offices with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help Punjab, Jakhar wondered as what were his (Badal’s) compulsions that prevented him from raising the matter with the centre even when his party is part of the government there.
He reminded Badal that when Modi became Prime Minister he (Badal) would announce that Punjab will get truck-loads of money. “What to speak of money, we have been robbed off, of our water even, which was already scarce,” he remarked.
