Highlights: BEGGARS AND OTHER HOMELESS PEOPLE AVOID GOING TO THE EXISTING NIGHT SHELTERS OF MC
To ensure that the homeless people spend cold nights in shelters, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has built 13 night shelters including nine temporary. However, the beggars and other homeless people avoid going to the existing night shelters of MC. Now, the civic body has built home shelters in every zone. The night shelters were located near clock tower and near Vishkarma Chowk but only few homeless people spend night in shelters. Earlier also the MC has started drive to shift homeless in night shelters but the people avoid going to shelters. MC officials preferring anonymity said that the beggars and other homeless people spend nights near temples, Gurdwaras and Railway station as many people use to donate food, blanket and other items during night time. In greed of food and blankets the homeless people avoid going in night shelters. Now, MC has setup temporary night shelters (Tent houses) near temples and railway station. Buses have also been arranged to ensure that the homeless people use the night shelters.
MC Commissioner Kamal Preet Kaur Brar said that nodal officers have also been appointed for these night shelters. She informed that in MC Zone A, night shelter has been prepared near Clock Tower (near Lakkar Bridge), opposite Master Tara Singh College near Mata Rani Chowk and on old Jail Road near Civil Hospital. Similarly in MC Zone B, night shelters have been prepared in Moti Nagar near Ghora Colony Road, near Vishwanath Mandir on Metro Road in Jamalpur, in sub Zone B near Suvidha Kendra in Sherpur Kalan. In MC Zone C, night shelters have been prepared in old Fire Brigade Building opposite Manju Cinema in Miller Ganj, in Gill Chowk near Park, at Basant Park. In MC Zone D, night shelters have been prepared in Dairy Complex near Fire Brigade Building on Hambran Road, near Bus Stand under the Rail Over Bridge, at Krishna Mandir.
