Ludhiana:The liquor vends in Ludhiana district to remain close from Saturday as no liquor contractor turned at the auction for liquor vends. However, 12 applications were received for 12 zones but at the time of auction no liquor contractor turned to offer bid. Left with no options, the Excise Department has decided to float the new tenders on April 4 with new terms and conditions.
In eight zones of Ludhiana district not even a single application was received.
Earlier, the auction was scheduled on April 27 but due to the poor response from liquor contractors the auction was postponed to March 31. Despite the Excise department have motivated the contractors to apply for the liquor vends only 12 applications were received. On Friday morning, the auction was scheduled at Bachat Bhawan but the Excise department officials were kept waiting for the bidders. Later, the auction was postponed by 4 pm.
In evening also, no bidder turned and the auction was deferred. In the absence of bidders, the liquor vends in Ludhiana district to remain close from April 1 in Ludhiana district. The Excise department has decided to float new tenders for liquor vends on April 4 with some relaxations in license fee.
The officials said that the department may take decision to sell the liquor of their own if the auction will not remain successful. In many districts including Bathinda and Ferozepur the auction was cancelled and the government is yet to take decision.
Jasdeep Singh, wine contractor said that the government has hiked license fee for liquor vends but they are demanding to roll back ten percent license fee. The Association has decided to boycott the auction if government will not agree on their demands.
Sources said that the government has decided to cut license fee by five percent but the wine contractors glued to their demands and were demanding ten percent cut in fee. The wine contractors said that if government will not fulfill their demand they will boycott the auction again.
