Non-bailable warrant against Sukhpal Khaira stayed by HC.
Chandigarh – The Punjab and Haryana High Court today stayed the non-bailable warrant issued against AAP MLA and the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, in a drug case. The single bench of Justice A B Chaudhari also issued a notice to the state government and fixed the next date of hearing on November 9. “The non-bailable warrant has been stayed by the high court today,” Sukhpal Khaira’s counsel Mehtab Khaira told reporters here. “We have got relief which we had sought from the court,” he said. Sukhpal Khaira had moved high court on November 3 against a Fazilka court’s order, while describing it as a “classic instance of political vendetta”. In his petition, he had asserted that an attempt was being made to rope him in as an accused with the aim to tarnish his reputation. On October 31, a court in Fazilka, had sentenced nine persons to imprisonment in a trans-border heroin smuggling racket which surfaced in 2015.The court had issued summons to Sukhpal Khaira under section 319 of the CrPC following an application from the prosecution. He was told to appear on November 30. Meanwhile, talking to reporters here, the AAP MLA hit out at the political parties, the Congress, the SAD and the BJP, for seeking his resignation. He also expressed displeasure at some of his own party colleagues who had reportedly sought his resignation on moral grounds.“Those who had launched a tirade against me will now feel embarrassed. I feel pained at saying that some of my party leaders were also involved in this mischief and they were playing into the hands of the current government,” said the AAP leader.
