Former Congressman and local political leader Mandeep Singh Manna today accused that Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) of not taking action against a restaurant that non-veg dishes served on the campus of Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences, a medical institute run by SGPC.
Alleging violation of ‘maryada’, Manna said the eatery, located near a gurdwara, was preparing mutton, fish and chicken dishes for visitors as well as hostellers. SGPC member Rajinder Singh Mehta is a partner in the restaurant, Café Green where Non-veg dishes served.Mehta said the issue was being blown out of proportion. “The gurdwara is located over 200 yards from the restaurant,” he said. Manna said, “The SGPC is taking rent of this place; how can all this happen without its notice? A gurdwara is also there on the premises.”
He also showed photographs purportedly showing non-vegetarian food being served to back his allegations.
When contacted, SGPC chief Badungar said, “I am unaware about this. It is not right to comment on something without checking it. I will go there in a day or two to get facts checked.”University Dean Dr KP Singh said, “We can’t impose restrictions on the students’ food preferences.”
However, SGPC additional secretary Harbhajan Singh Manawa, who also looks after the institute’s affairs, said, “It is a cause for concern that non-vegetarian food is being served in an SGPC institute.”
