Amritsar: Charanjit Kaur, a resident of village Kohala and student of class twelth, has tendered an application in the Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh through which she had sought police protection for her. In her complaint she alleged that her parents were exerting pressure upon her asking her to get married while she preferred to continue her studies. Acting upon her complaint, Deepak Sibbal of Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar to provide security to the complainant and fixed February 28 as the next date of hearing. The court had also directed father and mother of complainant Charanjit Kaur to appear before it upon next date of hearing.
The complainant Charanjit Kaur, however, alleged that she was undergoing studies of 12th class in a school of her native village and intended to continue her studies, however, her parents were bent upon marrying her to a youth who used to manufacture wooden furniture. She repeatedly requested her parents not to marry her, however, her parents had fixed her marriage with the aforesaid youth. Perturbed over this, the complainant approached Advocate Navjot Kaur, chairperson of society for women empowerment and green cross in Chandigarh, who took her to the Punjab and Haryana High Court and was still in her custody. Charanjit Kaur also claimed that she had earlier knocked at the door of a Court in Amritsar and tendered an application in the office of SSP of Amritsar, but none came to her rescue. Charanjit Kaur then preferred to move High Court, which had asked all the parties to appear in High Court upon the next date of hearing.
