The local SAD leadership on Sunday said that launching ‘parachute candidates’ in the assembly elections was one of the major reasons behind the defeat of the party in the polls.
SAD leaders categorically raised this issue during a meeting for the re-organisation of the party in Jalandhar. Almost all the leaders poured their heart out on the issue of parachute candidates.
A majority of the leaders said that whenever the party launched ‘parachute candidates’, they have faced defeat. The meeting went on for over three-hours.Among those heading the meeting was the three member committee constituted to reorganize the party organization including Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Santa Singh Umaidpuri and Paramjit Singh Sidhwan.
Many Akali leaders also blamed the BJP for the chaos in the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation. “A section of the SAD leaders blamed Mayor Sunil Jyoti for the rampant corruption in the civic body and poor development of the city”, party sources said.
Though the Jalandhar MC was jointly run by the SAD-BJP alliance but the Akali leaders blamed the BJP for failing to project a good show in the urban areas.Meanwhile, SAD leader and Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia advocated the need to begin the exercise of selecting candidates for the civic polls. “SAD ended up bearing the brunt of the failure of BJP in the assembly polls”, he said.
Bhatia also said that corruption was the order of the day in Jalandhar Municipal Corporation, which hampered the development works in the city. Among those present in the meeting were Gurcharan Singh Channi, Paramjit Singh Raipur, Sarabjit Singh Makkar, Baljit Singh Neelamahal, Charanjeev Lally and others.
