Mohali: In the 2012 assembly elections, a total 10 candidates contested from Mohali constituency. Sitting MLA from Congress party Balbir Singh Sidhu won the elections second time defeating nine candidates.
As far as upcoming elections are concerned, the three main political parties in line are Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Congress and AamAadmi Party.
SAD hasn’t announced any candidate from Mohali yet. As far as political scenario is concerned, SAD’s hold in Mohali has remained weak. Presently close to 10 leaders from SAD are ticket seekers. According to sources, 1-2 leaders are in the mood to contest elections as ‘independent candidate’ if they don’t get the ticket.
During the 2012 elections, huger for party ticket was at its extreme. Eventually, the party high command gave ticket to parachute candidate Balwant Singh Ramuwaliya but was defeated by Congress candidate and also because of internal clash of SAD unit in Mohali.
From Congress party, two candidates currently hold tickets- sitting MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu and officiating vice president of Anadpur Sahib parliamentary constituency youth congress leader Manjot Singh. Sidhu had won the last assembly elections second time from this seat. He defeated SAD candidate Balwant Singh Ramuwaliya by a margin of 16,752 votes. Later on Ramuwaliya become area in charge of SAD and tussle to become more powerful was on till 2015 when he ditched SAD and became cabinet minister of the samajwadi government in Uttar Pradesh.
Balbir Sidhu’s name is not yet announced by the party but he has the advantage of being the second time sitting MLA. Presently only AAP has announced its Mohali candidate- Himmat Singh Shergill. Earlier, in 2014 he was candidate of AAP for parliamentary constituency Anadpur Sahib against SAD candidate Prem Singh Chandumajra.
