Balachaur: The series of PAU Kisan Melas kicked off with organization of first Kisan Mela at Punjab Agricultural University’s Regional Research Station, Ballowal Saunkhri (Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar), on Wednesday.
The mela was based on the theme “Sow PAU seeds, adopt subsidiary occupations, do efficient marketing and maintain farm records.” Heavy rush of farmers was seen at the mela, wherein farmers interacted with the experts, sought solutions to their farm queries, saw live demonstrations, and purchased quality seed, planting material and PAU farm publications
The Chief Guest, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, called upon the visiting farmers to opt for hybrid seed production, use inputs as per need, go for soil testing, adopt subsidiary occupations (beekeeping, mushroom cultivation, food processing, etc.), focus on cooperative marketing and mechanization, and make use of fruit fly trap technology.
The PAU has recently developed an early maturing rice variety PR126, he told, while asking the farmers to purchase quality seeds from PAU. The University is focusing on improving yield and profit of farmers, in view of agricultural challenges cropping up, he observed. Disclosing that girl students in big number are pursuing agricultural education at PAU, he stressed on introducing skits to empower more rural girls in agriculture.
Highlighting the research achievements of PAU, Dr Ashok Kumar, Director of Research, said, “The University is developing crop varieties requiring less water and fertilizer, tolerant to biotic and abiotic stresses, and give better yield.” Recently, PAU has developed/released new varieties namely Punjab Basmati 4 and Punjab Basmati 5 of basmati; and CoPb 92, CoPb 93 and CoPb 94 of sugarcane, he informed. Dr Kumar also referred to newly recommended production-protection technologies for various crops.
Dr Manmohanjit Singh, Director, Regional Research Station, Ballowal Saunkhri, while proposingthe vote of thanks, shed light on the activities of RRS, Ballowal Saunkhri and new crop varieties, released by PAU.
