Ludhiana: The Punjab Agricultural University Teachers’ Association (PAUTA) executive continued their protest opposite Thapar Hall, PAU Ludhiana.
Dr K S Sangha, president, PAUTA while talking to Daily Post claimed, “Despite the third day protest in the University premises, this is such a shocking part for us that no o ne even from the administration has approached us. Moreover, not even V-C has sent any notice to us nor he came to approach us regarding the matter. We are going to protest until we get a fruitful result in the end.”
The association deplored the callous attitude of the administration towards the genuine demands of the teachers. The Vice Chancellor is creating a deadlock and this validates the apprehension about his style of functioning. The administration is involved in holding marathon meetings without any worthwhile output from these. Huge physical and financial costs are being incurred although the university is unable disperse salary on time. It is pertinent to mention that the salaries for the month of February have been dispersed on March 15. Presently all other bills (medical, TA, contingencies) are not being dispersed as the university has insufficient funds. The association raised the issue of condition of houses on campus and outstations. The seniority lists for allotment are being prepared based on arbitrary and non transparent criteria’s. Allotment of houses for the year 2017 has not started yet, even the list hasn’t been finalised.
There are no defined criteria for the handing over the additional charges for the administrative posts. In most of the cases seniority is being ignored and people close to V-C are being arbitrarily given these charges. In some cases, the charge has been given to a person who is also applicant for the post. Posts have been advertised and interviews are not being conducted for months together. The post of Director of Research is without a regular appointee since May 2016. The adhocism is affecting the functioning of the university seriously. The undermining of the statutory committees, particularly the Research evaluation Committee is blatant.
The Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers’, Organisations (PFUCTO) has extended support to the PAUTA agitation. The federation has expressed dismay at the harassment and humiliation of the PAU teachers at the hands of the administration. Dr Jagwant Singh,
Secretary, PFUCTO has conveyed the support of PFUCTO. Various other organisations have expressed their willingness to support PAUTA in restoring the dignity of teachers.
