LUDHIANA, JULY 28: The Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon congratulated the faculty today for their dedication and hard work that made PAU emerge as top university of the country. Addressing the faculty, Dr Dhillon highlighted the salient achievements of PAU made during 2016-17. He said the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has ranked PAU as the third best agricultural institution in the country in 2017. The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has ranked PAU as the second best agricultural university, third best agricultural institution in India and numero uno in Punjab in 2017, he added. “This is a result of your concerted efforts,” said Dr Dhillon to faculty.The University has also been honoured by Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding in 2017 for developing maximum landmark varieties, he added. The All India Coordinated Research Projects in Rice, Fodder, Agro-forestry and Honey Bee at PAU have been adjudged best during the year, he told. Dr Dhillon further disclosed, “PAU is the first in public sector to develop Bt cotton variety PAU Bt 1.” Calling it a revolutionary variety, he observed it can surpass other Bt cotton varieties.
Further, he revealed, “The successful management of whitefly in cotton resulted in highest cotton yield of 756 kg/hectare and saved pesticides by Rs 54.42 crore last year. The University developed rice variety PR 121 replaced Pusa 44 and became most popular among farmers, thus, occupying 29 per cent parmal area in 2016.” Another rice variety PR 126 showed outstanding performance, he told, saying that highest paddy yield of 6,154 kg/hectare has been obtained in 2017.About wheat variety PBW 723, Dr Dhillon said this has been developed through marker assisted backcross breeding. The wheat variety PBW 1 Zn is a first biofortified variety developed in India, he divulged. Dr Dhillon further said the year has been exceptional in terms of farm machinery with PAU developing Multipurpose High Clearance Sprayer and Auto Rotating Type Sprayer for control of sucking insect-pests.
The University also inked agreements for commercialization of several varieties, technologies and products. In addition, it started Farmer Portal and Seed Portal. The University scientists were elected as Fellows of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and conferred with Jawaharlal Nehru Award, he added. Four students of PAU won Prime Minister Fellowship in a year, which is highest in India, he said.Earlier, Dr R.S. Sidhu, Registrar, PAU, welcomed the VC and the faculty. He stated “It is a matter of great pride that PAU has made substantial achievements during 2016-17.”
