Pb government to groom school kids as hockey players: Education Minister
Jalandhar(DP Correspondent) – Buoyed over the success of Indian Hockey team in Asia Cup, Education Minister Punjab Aruna Chaudhary Monday said that Punjab government would make concerted efforts to groom the children at school level to excel in Hockey. Addressing the gathering during inauguration of 34th Surjit Hockey tournament in Jalandhar, the minister said that the motive behind this exercise was to catch the students at younger age. She said that this would ensure that the national game of hockey was promoted in every nook and corner of the state. Chaudhary said that this would also pave way for producing more world class players from the state to bring laurels for country. The Minister said that the state government would soon finalise this policy along with evolving a mechanism to generate funds for this ambitious program. Chaudhary said that sports and education would be promoted at a par to ensure holistic development of children. The minister said that this was the need of hour to encourage sports, especially hockey in Punjab. Lauding the organising committee of Surjit Hockey for conducting national level tournament every year, the minister said that it was the best tribute to the iconic hockey player, Surjit Singh Randhawa, who passed away at the prime of his life.Later on interacting with the media persons, the minister said that decision to merge schools with few students into bigger schools was taken to ensure optimum utilization of teachers. She said that most of the teachers were in favor in this historic decision, which would help in improving the functioning of government schools in the state. She said that only a section of teaching fraternity was opposing this decision for their vested interests. Prominent among those present were Olympian and MLA Pargat Singh, Rajinder Beri, Bawa Henry and other officials.
