Nawanshahr: On their statewide call, activists of Kirti Kisan Union (KKU), Pendu Mazdoor Union and Istri Jagran Manch, Punjab here today jointly held a protest march and dharna in support of their demands. Later they submitted a memorandum of their demands to the deputy commissioner for onward submission to CM Parkash Singh Badal.
Talking about their demands, Kirti Kisan Union state leader Surinder Singh Bains and Jamhoori Adhikar Sabha leader Jasvir Deep said these included providing one-third of panchayati lands in villages to Dalits on subsidized lease, as per the law, for agricultural purposes, residential plots to landless, homeless farm labourers, and providing them piece of land to enable them to throw their animals’ waste (dher), and release of dalits who were arrested in false cases in Balad Kalan in Sangrur district a few days back.
The protesters also condemned the lathi charge on Dalits in Balad Kalan and demanded action against police officials involved in it. The leaders said due to the formation of a strong nexus among bureaucrats, landlords and political leaders in the state, weaker and oppressed sections were suffering atrocities as never before and there was great resentment among these sections against the ruling alliance.
They said police in Balad Kalan had registered cases under various sections including section 302 against as many as 170 persons which was perhaps unprecedented in the history of the state. The protesters also demanded waiving off loans of marginal farmers and farm labourers on the occasion. Earlier, the protesters mourned the death of the district president of the Pendu Mazdoor Union Bhupinder Mann in a road accident in Balachaur a couple of days ago.
