Nawanshahr: The artists of SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr) district and those hailing from Phagwara Tehsil of Kapurthala district here today held a protest march in the town against the killing of a 24-year old dancer in firing at a wedding in Maur town of Bathinda district on Saturday night. The protesters demanded capital punishment for the killers of dancer Kulwinder Kaur who was pregnant. Before taking out the protest, the activist gathered at the local Baradari Gardens to hold a rally and express their condolences to the departed soul.
Hardev Chahal, a senior artist, expressed grave concern over rising incidents of fatal attacks on the artists in the state. The state government led by Parkash Singh Badal came in for severe criticism at the hands of speakers who included Jasveer Deep, Kulwinder Wurriach and Channi Gulpuri for its failure to protect the artists. “Repeated attacks on them amounted to attacks on the very sensitivity of the society as artists represent only that (sensitive) part of it (society),” said Deep.
A demand for Rs 20 lakh as compensation to the dependents of the deceased was raised at the rally. Registration of criminal cases against those persons who carry arms inside the marriage palaces and against the owners of marriage palaces were the other demands made by the protesters. The rallyists later submitted a memorandum to CM Parkash Singh Badal through GA to DC Anamjot Kaur. The artists who were present in the rally included Lakhwinder surapuri, Nirmal Nimma, Manjit Singh, Balwinder singh Rinku, Sham Matwala, Raj Balachaur, Parkash Kumar Mintoo and Inderdeep Singh Inder, among others.
