Patiala: Even after over two and a half months, the police have failed to make any headway in the infamous Nabha Jail Break case as Vicky Gaunder and three other gangsters are still at large.
Interestingly, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the Deputy Chief Minister-cum-Home Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal immediately after the Jail break at the maximum security Jail at Nabha remains clueless.
Though a total of 12 persons along with a Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), Chief Harminder Singh alias Mintu and Neeta Deol have been arrested, many others were picked up and interrogated but without tangible results.
On the morning of November 27, 2016 history was created when gun-toting gangsters using three vehicles stormed the jail, fired over 100 rounds and took away six jail inmates including KLF Chief, Harminder Singh alias Mintu and his associate Kashmira Singh and gangsters Amandeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, Kulpreet Singh Neeta Deol and Vicky Gaunder.
Mintu was arrested by the alert cops of Delhi Police’s special branch on November 28, 2016, whereas gangster Kulpreet Singh alias Neeta Deol was nabbed by the Madhya Pradesh (MP) Police from Indore on January 17, 2017. Whereas, Parminder Singh alias Pinda was nabbed by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police.
The SIT set up to crack the case under the Chairmanship of Patiala Zone Inspector General (IG), Paramraj Singh Umranangal and Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Amar Singh Chahal and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Gurmit Singh Chauhan were not able to produce good results.
Umranangal later expanded SIT with the inclusion of several “efficient” police officers.
It is being argued that as the state geared up for elections, SIT officials were given marching orders and deployed for the safe conduct of elections.
Interestingly, the Patiala Police took all of the arrested persons on the Police remand for several days but it failed to get any major breakthrough in arresting the gangsters.
Meanwhile, one of the Police officials on the condition of anonymity said that they had now started picking up the leads of the crime after getting free from election duty. The local police claimed that all the arrests were made on the basis of information provided by it to other states.
Head-search showed that the jail was under staffed and had no weapons to counter the attack.
