Kusum Arora, Jalandhar, August 8, Post Modi govt Political asylum cases witnesses. If facts were any indication, the past couple of years witnessed a seven fold increase in number of Indians applying for ‘Political Asylum’ in United States (US), a factor which came to the fore in a report of US Immigration Department. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) under the US Immigration Department highlighted that over 1800 plus Indians applied for political asylum from India last year. While lack of jobs was cited as one of the major reasons behind migrating to US, another issue of concern was growing ‘intolerance’ post Modi government to power in the country. The number of political asylum applicants from India were rising every year, claimed the US based North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) representatives.NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal sought information from FOIA (copy of letter available), the US Immigration Department and revealed that in 2016 as many as 1802 persons of Indian origin applied for asylum in the US. “This number was seven times the previous record of the FOIA, which was an alarming trend. Out of 1802 only 59 people were granted asylum by the US government”, he said.Chahal attributed the steep rise in the political asylum cases to growing incidents of ‘intolerance’ and ‘lack of good job opportunities’ in India. “Though a large number of Indians apply for migration to US but the rise in political asylum cases were an alarming sign. It was noticed that in most of cases, people mentioned ‘intolerance’ cases as the main reason of shifting to US”, he added. The NAPA Executive Director also stated that in the year 2013, only 722 persons of Indian origin had applied for asylum in the US. “This number grew three times, as 2412 people applied for political asylum, soon after BJP led Prime Minister Narendra Modi government came to power”, he said, adding that the immediate increase highlighted the change in the mindset of people. A year after i 2015, US Department of Immigration witnessed a seven fold increase in the number of applications for political asylum. “The number of applicants seven times from that of 2013, which was a major concern for the Indian American Community”, Chahal said.He stated that in the wake of such figures, issues like lack of jobs and intolerance cases in India under Modi government could not be ignored. Considering these factors, NAPA urged the Government of India to take note of such a trend, which was bringing a cause of concern for the Indian Americans in US. “The Modi led centre government should take a serious note of the issue, as it was affecting India’s image globally”, Chahal maintained.
