Bathinda: Following the last year’s successful initiative, the weeds supporting white fly will be destroyed this year too under specially run campaign. To ensure successful implementation the departments will carry out the task of destroying weeds under technical guidance from Agriculture Department.
Deputy Commissioner Bathinda, Ghanshyam Thori said this here on Thursday while presiding over meeting convened to discuss the course of action for the weed removal campaign. He said that all departments have been deputed to destroy weeds in respective areas till March 31 and will submit their weekly report to Chief Agriculture Office Bathinda.
Speaking at the event, Chief Agriculture Officer Bathinda Dr Jagtar Singh Brar said that last year 80,000 hectares of land was under cotton cultivation in district, while this year the figure is expected to reach 1, 40, 000 hectares.
Dr Brar added that in year 2016, a special campaign was run to destroy weeds supporting white fly, which gave generous results. Despite 1 to 2 lesser rounds of pesticides spray used last year, the cotton crop production was record breaking. He added that in 2015 the white fly attack resulted in production of 190 kg cotton per hectare, which soared to 820 kg per hectare in 2016 and this year 850 kg per hectare is expected.
He added that before cotton seed sowing, the weeds like congress grass, putth kanda, cannabis, dhatura etc are being destroyed. This year too under the cotton scheme, the Agriculture Department has deputed one scout each for two villages and one field supervisor each for 20 villages that will take the cotton technical know-how at village level. Agriculture department will provide seeds related information by the mid of March and from April onwards will provide information about use of pesticides and sprays.
