Malout: The Constitutional fabric that no one in any respect will persuade a citizen of India to change his religion either through coercion or allurement, has got a serious blow in Punjab’s Malout city when the principal of a prestigious missionary school here allegedly dangled the carrot of fee waiver for their wards if they embrace Christianity. As a result, a high drama was witnessed on Tuesday on the campus of Sacred Heart Convent School, a missionary school.
It all started when the school did not release the results of students who had not deposited their fee and the parents union requested the principal to release their results too, which the school management refused to do. According to Manohar Lal Doomra, president of Parents’ Union Malout, the school had excessively hiked fee this session. “For long, we have been fighting hard the menace of fee hike.
Finally, the Deputy Commissioner resolved the issue, deciding that only 10 per cent hike will be effected in the fee collected during the last session, but in vain,” said Doomra. “When we insisted that the results of all children, who have not even paid the excessive fee be released, the principal asked us to change our religion. We are pained at the behaviour of school principal,” added Doomra.
Tinka Garg, another parent, said that the principal even refused to talk to the District Education Officer (DEO) and remained firm on his conversion statement. “We demand his resignation with immediate effect. Principal should not bring religion in the matters of education and issues like fee concession. It is a serious matter, which needs to be looked into by the government. Principal has communalised a sacred place like school where children are taught,” added Garg.
Talking to Daily Post, Principal Father Benny Thomas said that the parents came to his room and started pushing the table after which he got scared and only said: ‘My God is with me.’ He said that his statement was altered by the parents. “We were requested by the police and the SDM to apologise to the parents and all of us went to the Guest House where all were gathered. I said there that I respect all religions. I haven’t apologised since I haven’t said anything as is being claimed by parents,” he said.
