To tackle the problem of drugs and drug traffickers, Anti-drugs Special Task Force (STF) in Punjab wants the state government to delegate “legal interception of all modes of communication of suspects under the Indian Telegraph Act 1885” to additional director general of police and inspector generals of police posted in the STF.
At present, only state’s police intelligence wing is authorised to make requests for such interceptions to the state’s Home department. Even Vigilance Bureau routes such requests through intelligence wing of Punjab. The proposal regarding interception was sent to state government for consideration, told senior police officer.
According to sources, the STF has also requested the government that it be taken out of purview of Right to Information Act as RTI requests related to drugs investigation cases are not correct in this way. An intelligence input can not be disclosed to anyone.
The STF was formed following an announcement by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh in March after Congress formed the government.
