Chandigarh: Punjab government announce good news to drinkers. After the Supreme Court’s verdict of July 11, 2017, today, the Punjab Cabinet approved Punjab Excise Act. It would allow selling liquor to licensed contracts under the municipal zones. The condition of 500 meters of national provincial routes, would not apply on these contracts under the municipal zones.Cabinet meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh. In this meeting the proposal to amend the provisions of section 72, 78 and 81 of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914 to check illegal liquor smuggling was also found correct.
With this amendment, if anyone carries more than 12 bottles (750 ML per bottle) of liquor out from Punjab, non-bailable warrant would be issued against him. At the same time, if the vehicle is carrying more than three boxes of liquor bottles, it will also be confiscated. During a trial, the vehicle would get bail after the bank guarantee of equal value or cash deposit to the court.
