Ludhiana, September 29 (000)-“The Punjab Government has chalked out a special plan to keep the large industrial town of Ludhiana having dense population absolutely green. Under the plan, ready made plants/trees along with pots would be provided to the city residents for keeping on rooftops.” This was disclosed by the Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister, Punjab, Mr. Sadhu Singh Dharamsot here today at circuit house while interacting with the media persons.The minister further said that the state government wants to develop Ludhiana in a planned manner and the job of making the city green has been entrusted to his department. As a result, the department has decided to go in for ‘Rooftop Forestry’ under which the city residents would be provided ready made plants/trees of 1-2 years along with pots absolutely free of cost. To get these, an application would have to be submitted at the office of forest department, Ludhiana and the department would provide the plants along with the pots within one month. The plants would include medicinal plants, those having fruits, decorated and shady ones.The minister further said that the priority would be accorded to the economically weaker areas (Slum Areas) and densely populated ones. As per the plan, the plants would be planted on the sides of and in the middle of all the roads in city. The trees standing in middle of the roads won’t be axed as per the instructions of national green tribunal and would be given a white colour marking so as to avoid them causing road accidents during nights. He also appealed to the panchayats to send proposals to department to convert vacant shamlat lands into forest areas in order to lay the network of greenery throughout the state.He also informed that wearing of uniforms on duty has been made mandatory for the forest guards and range officers so as to deter those causing harm to the trees and plants and those violating this instruction would be strictly proceeded against. The departmental officers have also been instructed to go more often for field duties instead of sitting in the offices.
He also appealed to the farmers to avoid burning paddy to keep the fertility of the soil intact. He further disclosed that the state government had taken up the issue with Union Government to provide financial assistance to farmers to till the residue of the crops in the fields itself. He also flagged off 4 vans of the agriculture department exhorting farmers not to burn paddy.About Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-poll by the media persons, he said that he is hopeful that Mr. Sunil Jakhar would be victorious by a huge margin and this election is being contested on the plank of excellent performance of state government during past 6 months and failure of Union Government during last 3 years.
