Punjab to have Centre of Excellence for Disability Sports in Zirakpur. To be a force of focus unlike any other to train Indian Paralympians, coaches, technical officials and volunteers who will dramatically advance Para-Olympic sport. Punjab to have its first and north India’s only Centre of Excellence for Disability Sports in Zirakpur.
According to information, the central government has proposed to open three centres all over India from which one is proposed to be in Zirakpur, Punjab, second in the financial capital of Andhra Pradesh Vishakhapatnam and third in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. This is initiative of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment’s department of persons with disabilities with the agenda of ‘disables don’t need our sympathy they need our empathy’.
To boost up the sports rankings in Paralympics Indian government has proposed Rs 120 crores for each centre and state government will provide the land. This centre is derived from Brazilian model of disabled sports. According to sources the land for this project in Zirakpur has been identified at Dayalpura village. The 10 acres land will be purchased by the state government at the expense of about Rs 50 crores. This will be a national level institute to train disabled individuals to represent India at international level.
The source person mentioned that 70 per cent youth of India wants to become sportsperson, but they lack opportunity and professional training. This institute would bring a super boost to the medallists of Para-sports. State has no arrangements for disabled sports. Although after the central government initiative to boost up Paralympic sports the state has no arrangements for disabled sporting activity. According to a senior leader of Congress, the state has not even a single event for disabled till now but it will introduce soon. Punjab has been in the highlights where the state is considered to be producing mega players in sports and even the government has an international level player in the cabinet, still, there is no such sport to promote disable sports in Punjab. If there would be no event to promote or practise how a sportsperson can play in an international Paralympic sport with an excellence centre only.
