Patiala: Passion of rich Punjabi literature and love for the mother tongue is compelling readers to ‘xerox’ copies of books penned by renowned writers as the department created for the promotion of the language, Punjab Languages Department, has stopped publication of books a long while ago.
Even as Punjab Languages Department cites reasons for non-publication of books down to acute financial crunch, yet it failed to dampen the enthusiasm and love for Punjabi in its readers.
Punjabi literature-loving people have been suffering a lot due to non-publication of books and in such a situation, they are exploring other options as they are getting them‘xeroxed.’However, this is proving an expensive option as they have to fork out more money in comparison to the actual price of these books.
As the Punjab Languages Department has not printed or reprinted a large number of Punjabi books penned by renowned writers since a long time, these books have gone out of the stock even in the department and if one or two copies are available, then their condition is also very poor.Yet, it does not discourage people eager to read these books, and left with no other option, they get the copies ‘xeroxed.’
One such Punjabi literature lover Anju Rani, while speaking to Daily Post, said that due to the indifferent attitude of the state government towards the Punjab Languages Department, not only the department but the treasury of the Punjabi literature is on a downward trend and if it is not checked in time then it will prove to be suicidal for the mother tongue.
Another Punjabi lover Navdeep Khatri said that keeping in view the present condition of the Punjab Languages Department now the state government must act and release required funds so that the books can be printed by the department allowing people to start reading them.
State Higher Education Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra said that the state government is releasing grants from time-to-time to Punjab Languages Department to complete its works and it was the duty of the department to organise things accordingly.
Director of the Department Gursharan Kaur said that the work over the printing of the books would only start when the department receives any grant from the state government as the department is not having enough funds for printing of books.
