Cyber Security System of Chandigarh and Punjab have issued warnings to all the departments against the cyber attack — Ransomware virus .
“We are updating our anti-virus system and scanning is being done to ensure there is no threat,” said a senior official, who did not wish to be named, of a law-enforcing agency in Chandigarh.
On cyber security higher authorities said that they have warned all the organizations about Ransomware .“We have asked the organizations to educate their employees not to open any mail which has attachments “.exe” file,” said Rashmi Sharma Yadav, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), cyber cell, Chandigarh police.Ransomware mainly affects severs and not individuals. Already, India’s cyber security agency, Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In), has issued a red-coloured ‘critical alert’ in connection with the WannaCry attack and not to pay ransom. The Ransomware virus had stopped car factories, hospitals, shops and schools in over 75 countries.
“The Ransomware virus is a virus that affects computer systems and locks up the files on your computer and encrypts them in a way that you cannot access them anymore,” said Harinder Singh Sekhon, in-charge, cyber cell.
He added, “Ransomware is a programme that gets into your computer only by downloading and it will ask you to pay ransom in Bitcoins. However, paying the ransom is no guarantee that the files will be retrieved, thus a warning has been issued not to pay ransom.”
“For individuals, the only advice is ‘do not open files from unknown sources,” added Sekhon.
