Ludhiana, September 3:- The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today chided the Punjab Congress for taking cheap publicity and credit for restart of flight service to Delhi from the Sahnewal airport here despite well knowing that the Udaan (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made this possible. In a statement here, former minister and SAD spokesperson Maheshinder Singh Grewal said it was unfortunate that Congress leaders, including Ludhiana mp Ravneet Bittu, were resorting to chest thumping by erecting hoardings to take credit for the re-start of this facility. “Ravneet Bittu is a parliamentarian. He of all persons should know about the Udaan scheme launched by the Prime Minister. This scheme has given a new lease of life to regional airports who were finding to difficult to run flights due to lack of commercial viability. The scheme, which is aimed at stimulating regional connectivity, allows 50 per cent of all bookings for flights at Rs 2,500 per seat”.Asking Ravneet Bittu to catch up on history and current affairs also, Mr Grewal said he should know that the idea for a Ludhiana – Delhi flight was first conceived by then State deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in May 2007 and fructified on March 13, 2008 when Alliance Air decided in principle to operate flights from Ludhiana. The Akali leader said this too was the result of sustained efforts of the then SAD-BJP government and its Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who held a series of meetings with Union Civil Aviation Ministry, Defence Ministry and Airport Authority of India for expediting clearance for the proposal at various levels.Asking Bittu not to resort to vulgar theatrics along with his band of psycophants as he has done yesterday, Mr Grewal said the Congress leader should also try to contribute towards the development of the city instead of appropriating work done by others. He said Bittu would do better to submit his report card to the citizens of Ludhiana so that they may also understand what he had done for the city. “Please tell if you have got a single important institution or development to Ludhiana. As you have clearly failed abysmally on this front it would be better if you started performing first and taking credit later.
