Jalandhar: Lashing out at the Dalit leaders of the SAD-BJP combine, the Safai Sewaks on Wednesday said that had theleaders raised their demands with the Punjab government, they would not have hold yet another strike. The ongoing strike of Safai Sewaks on Wednesday entered its second day.
While the safai sewaks remained on strike, dumps of garbage were scattered at almost all the key junctions of the city. No lifting of garbage was done in the city. From the posh markets to the localities, filth and garbage welcomed the residents for the second consecutive day.
Chandan Grewal, the President of Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation said that the dalit leaders of SAD-BJP remained mute spectators to the demands of the safai sewaks. “All thanks to the lack of concern of Dalit leaders of Punjab government that safai sewaks were till date waiting for the fulfillment of genuine demands”, he said.
Grewal said that while Punjab government gave false assurances to the safai sewaks, the Dalit leaders never came out in the support of the safai sewaks. It is pertinent to mention here that earlier too, the safai sewaks had remained on strike for over a fortnight in 2014 over their pending demands.
Chandan Grewal also said that under the Akali rule, nobody was happy, as almost all section of employees had to follow the path of strike to get their demands accepted. Pawan Baba, the president of Punjab Sewermen Employees Union also maintained that the state government had been befooling the safai sewaks for the last five years but now they would not accept any assurances.
Though Mayor Sunil Jyoti, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Gupreet Singh Khera met the safai sewaks to defer the strike but to no avail. “We have decided to intensify the strike, if our demands were not by the Punjab government”, the safai sewaks said.
The strike was led by Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation, Punjab Sewermen Employees Union, Class IV Maha Union and others. The employees have been on strike for their demand of regularizing class IV employees, after Punjab government regularized 4000 employees of local bodies department.
