Chandigarh: A well-known conman on Tuesday attempted to mislead the media and tarnish the public image of some senior police officers and two top functionaries of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Meet Dr Gurvinder Singh Samra, also known as Gurvinder Singh Samra of Kartarpur in Jalandhar district, who had been to jail a number of times and was convicted and sentenced to eight years imprisonment. He had been running a hospital in Kartarpur some 20 years ago, when he was not a qualified doctor, disclosed Dr R S Bal who had taken his hospital in Kartarpur on rent three years ago when Samra was in jail.
He was booked in a number of cases of forgery and fraud by the-then Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gautam Cheema now Inspector General Police (Traffic) posted in Chandigarh, which was a matter of record.
The conman extended invitation to newsmen asking them to attend a press conference at 11:30 am in Chandigarh Press Club on Tuesday.
Samra named some police officers and AAP functionaries in the press conference who had allegedly prepared a forged general power of attorney showing his father 90-year-old Gurdip Singh, a patient of dementia, having given rights to manage and sell properties worth Rs 300 crore, which included a 100-bedded hospital in Kartarpur, Hotel Wooden City in Kartarpur, a bungalow in Jalandhar, another in Amritsar, a Mall in Gurgaon and 150 acres of rural and urban land.
He alleged that a lady doctor Amandeep Kaur was leading a nexus of police officers and politicians who were engaged in grabbing private properties. The volunteers of AAP were part of the gang which had grabbed a property of an NRI worth Rs 40 crore.
AAP spokesman when contacted refused to react to the malicious campaign.
Dr Amandeep’s husband Dr R S Bal disclosed that Samra had been doing surgeries on people and charging them heavily.
Bal said that a month ago Samra held a press conference in Jalandhar but no newspaper published his concocted story. After rejection in Jalandhar, he had now chosen Chandigarh Press Club thinking that mediapersons here would buy his tale.
However, when Daily Post started inquiring into the allegations, it turned out that Samra was the same person who used to call himself a doctor and was running a hospital in Kartarpur. He was booked in a dozen criminal cases by IPS Gautam Cheema and was jailed, which was a matter of record.
Cheema, when contacted, said, “It was news for me that I am part of a gang of grabbers. I remember that while posted as ASP in Jalandhar I had registered 12 FIRs against Samra.”
Another police officer, who did not want to be named, said, “I booked Samra in a number of cases and he morphed my picture showing me dancing in a party which was published to defame me.”
Dr Amandeep Kaur said that she did not know Gautam Cheema or any one from AAP. A civil suit regarding tenancy of the hospital was pending in the court which had granted them a stay order.
When questioned on phone, Samra accepted that he was jailed on the “basis of false” allegations but now had been released. It was a fact which he did not disclose in the press conference.
For the convenience of journalists, he issued five page press note in Punjabi which made “startling revelations.”
