Nurmahal (Jalandhar), December 1 : – A private school in Nurmahal, Jalandhar struck off the names of Scheduled Castes (SC) students who were the beneficiaries under centre sponsored Post Matric SC Scholarship scheme. The school was demanding fee for the current academic session from them. The management of Doaba Arya School Nurmahal struck off the names of class XI and XII dalit students, who are beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme. The students were being harassed in the name of fees for the current academic session nie 2017-18 for past many months, after which they were told to move out by the school. Following school’s stand, Punjab Student Union (PSU) and Ambedkar Sena Friday took up the cause of around 150 SC students including girls, whose name was struck off. District Secretary of PSU Jaskaran Azad said that they had brought the matter to the notice of Sub Divisional Magistrate Phillaur on November 24 but no action was taken. “We have given four days time to school authorities to take back the SC students, failing which a massive protest would be held on December 6”, he said.Azad said that the students were gearing up for their final exams due in February, when their name was struck off by the school authorities. “Punjab government and centre government’s failure in providing the scholarship on time to SC students was taking a toll on their education”, he added. The PSU members demanded that a case under SC/ST Act should be registered against the principal of the school. It was learnt that the students were asked to pay whatever they could, if they wanted to continue their studies.Principal Anil Sharma justified the move and said that they have been teaching the SC student free of cost for the last two years. “In the absence of any grant of scholarship amount, it became difficult for us to even pay the salaries of the teachers. How should we run the school?” he questioned. The Principal said that they directed the students to bring fees, which they would be getting in their bank accounts. “Some student groups involved in politics were instigating our students. We have just asked the students to deposit the scholarship, which they have received in their bank accounts. Infact, we sought support from their parents also”, he kept emphasizing.
