Amritsar: In what comes as one more pointer to the state of affairs prevalent in the jails of Punjab, two prisoners clashed in the Central Jail here on Tuesday, which left one inmate dead. Police said the duo first had some petty arguments, which snowballed into a scuffle in which Swaran Singh, 45, an under-trial and resident of Patti village, Tarn Taran, died. Police said the accused Kiran Kumar, hit his genitals which caused Singh’s death.
Police said that the alleged accused Kiran, who was arrested for his involvement in a number of snatching cases, has now been booked in a murder case registered under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Singh’s body was handed over to his family.
JAIL MINISTER UPSET
Jail Minister Sohan Singh Thandal, when questioned, said: “It is a disturbing incident that one inmate has been killed in the clash in the jail. I came to know about the incident late in the evening on Tuesday but by taking notice of that I have sought a detailed report from the ADGP, Jails, who is likely to put it up before me latest by early morning of Wednesday.” He said that Superintendent of the Jail was on leave and the Deputy Superintendent was holding the charge but “he failed to tackle the situation.” Expressing grouse, Thandal also didn’t mince words while sharing: “We were running short of staff. So we had sought extra staff from the Home Department that had further assigned the job to the DGP, Punjab Police. DGP deputed four PPS officers from the Punjab Police cadre to the jails on deputation.”
