Jalandhar: Following guidance from former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam, a team of experts of ‘Vishwa Mitri Abhiyan’ and Vadodara Initiative Council has joined hands with renowned environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal to clean the polluted Vishwa Mitri river of Gujarat.
Baba Seechewal, who met the experts in Vadodara assured that whenever the work on cleaning the historic Vishwa Mitri river would start, he would lead the campaign.
Vishwa Mitri Abhiyan campaigner HS Mehta and former ISRO scientist NK Gupta said that former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam has suggested them to seek guidance from Baba Seechewal before cleaning the river. “The former President of India has highlighted that how Seechewal led a public campaign to clean the pious Kali Bein rivulet, where Sri Guru Nanak Dev got enlightenment”, they said. Dr Mehta said that the 135 kilometers long Vishwa Mitri river holds religious and historic significance, as Vishwa Mitra has conducted prayers on the banks of this river.
“Even the pious Gayatri Mantra of Hindu religion was written here. People in Gujarat holds this river with great reverence but pollution from factories, municipal corporations and other sources have left this river highly polluted”, he added.
Former ISRO scientist NK Gupta also said that even though many researches have been conducted but the simple technique of Seechewal to clean polluted rivers was commendable.
The organizers also shared that a historic bridge which was constructed in the year 1890 was still intact. “People have religious beliefs and reverence associated with this river and they want to initiate the campaign to save it”, they said.
Meanwhile, Seechewal urged public to raise the issue of cleaning Vishwa Mitri river in the upcoming Assembly Elections of Gujarat. He also asked the public to ensure that their government implements the Water Act 1974, which was their basic right.
