Dera Sacha Sauda support issue
Amritsar: The three-member committee of the SGPC, constituted to probe the matter pertaining to procuring support of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda followers by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in last month’s state assembly elections, submitted its investigation report to Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh at the Akal Takht secretariat here on Monday afternoon.
The members of the investigation committee, comprising senior vice president Baldev Singh Kayampuri, general secretary Amarjit Singh Chawla and interim committee member Gurcharan Singh Grewal of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Monday met the Jathedar of Akal Takht at the secretariat and handed over the report.
It may be recalled that over the issue of procuring votes and support of Dera Sacha Sauda followers by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for its nominees in the last month’s Punjab assembly elections, a lot of hue and cry had been raised by many Sikh organisations, including some radicals outfits, over it.
Following this development, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh had written a letter to SGPC president Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar in this regard and asked the latter to get the matter probed by constituting a team specially for this purpose. Acting upon this, the SGPC president had constituted a three-member probe committee to investigte the issue and submit its report. The committee, after taking into account all pros and cons of the matter and holding a thorough investigation into the matter, is learnt to have prepared its report that was made available to Akal takht Jathedar on Monday.
It may, however, be recalled that the probe committee was in the eye of storm for taking a considerable time in conducting the probe and filing report. Leaders of many Sikh organisations, however, had termed the constitution of probe team as an ‘eyewash’ alleging that there was little use of constitution of a probe committee after the assembly elections had been held in the state.
