Shahkot – Shahkot is all set to witness a tough fight between the ruling Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Both the parties are eyeing to win the bye-election and build a momentum for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in their own favour. Shiromani Akali Dal aims to halt the winning chariot of the Congress in the state. The ruling party has won all the elections held in the state including Gurdaspur bye-poll and Municipal Corporation elections.Congress and SAD have mobilised their top leaders for Shahkot. Congress ministers and Akali leaders are campaigning in every corner of the constituency. It will be tough for the Congress to upset the SAD’s applecart in the home-turf Kohar. SAD has fielded Naib Singh Kohar from the seat earlier held by his father. In Shahkot, over 66 per cent votes belong to OBCs and Dalits, followed by Jatt Sikh vote counts at 27 per cent and others only 7 per cent. Akali Dal will have to work hard to hold on their OBC support.PARAMILITARY FORCES
Six companies of paramilitary forces will be deployed at booths on May 28 to ensure peaceful, free and fair polling. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting to review the security arrangements for the poll chaired by General Observer Ravi Kant Jain, Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma and Senior Superintendent of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar.VIDEO CAMERAS
In order to ensure 100 per cent attendance of the polling staff for the rehearsal of bye-elections on the coming Sunday, Deputy Commissioner has ordered to ensure complete videography of the rehearsals. DC has cautioned the officials that stern action would be taken against the staffs who do not report for duty.
