The Centre has no plans to extend any financial help to the states, which are faced with funds crunch including Punjab. Union Minister for Housing and Urban affairs Hardeep Singh Puri said recently that the Centre cannot help these states as the Centre has to spend resources for the whole country and has no surplus funds.“The states should generate resources on their own,” he told a select group of journalists. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has already rejected any help to Punjab on the issue of waiving farmers’ debt. Punjab had high hopes from the Union Budget. It had requested the Centre to bear the burden of farmers jointly as the farmers have been producing crops for the Central pool. Punjab is also in the midst of preparing its budget proposals. Sources said that in the new Budget, there are a number of schemes which are based on sharing system. Punjab has also requested the Centre to release funds on 90:10-ratio for border areas’ development.
