State govt to provide permanent remedy to protect crops in Mand area: Jakhar. Slamming the Opposition for misleading the people on the issue of farmers’ debt, PPCC president Sunil Jakhar Thursday said that the State govt led by Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh was making strenuous efforts for welfare of the farmers.
Interacting with the media persons here on Thursday during his visit to the flooded villages of Mand area, the PPCC chief said that it was on record that Captain Amarinder Singh has always bailed out the farmers from any crisis faced by them.Jakhar along with the local MLAs Navtej Singh Cheema, Ramanjit Singh Sikki and others visited the flood affected villages of Baghuana and Sherpur Dogran in Mand area and said, “The state government would find a permanent remedy to protect the loss of crops faced by the people due to floods in Mand area of Doaba region.”
The PPCC chief said that the State govt has already enhanced the compensation given to farmers for loss due to natural disaster from Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000 per acre. “I would also urge Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to order a special girdawari to assess the quantum of loss suffered by farmers of region due to floods”, he added.
The senior Congress leader also lauded the people of the region for their sheer bravery for staying in Mand area, which was covered from all sides by Beas river. He said that Congress would make all out efforts to secure their interests.Daily Post had in these columns highlighted that around 5,000 acres of paddy crop in Mand area was inundated because of rising water level in Beas river. While the paddy crop was damaged, their houses were also left inundated at some places.
Replying to a query, Jakhar expressed hope that expert group constituted by Captain Amarinder Singh under the leadership of former Chairman of Commission for Agricultural Cost and Prices Dr T Haque would prove to be very beneficial for the farmers of the state.
He said that the Haque committee has been mandated to assess the quantum of agricultural debt on farmers in Punjab and suggest ways and means for its waiver.Jakhar also said that now when the farming community of Punjab was in dire straits, it was the moral duty of the Modi government to extend a helping hand to them. “Modi should not shy away from utilizing Rs 9 lakh crore saved from decrease in price of crude oil in international market for the well being of the farmers of the country”, he demanded.
On another query, the PPCC chief said that during the last 10 years case were registered against 36 people for spurious pesticides and ironically all of them were today roaming escort free. “However, during the last three months of Capt government, cases were registered against 76 persons for spurious pesticides and insecticides. The culprits supplying poor quality pesticides would be soon put behind the bars,” he said.Jakhar was accompanied by local MLAs and district administration officials during the visit.
