Renowned Agriculture Economist and Chancellor of the Central University Bathinda Dr. Sardara Singh Johal has advised the Punjab Government to stop the production of Rice in Punjab and start selling the canal water to other states like Rajasthan and Haryana, which is being used to produced rice.Talking to Daily Post, Dr. Johal said that out of the total 40 percent water used for producing rice in Punjab, 27 percent is the canal water which is being used and I had advised the government that stop producing rice which will save the water and start selling water to other states. “The Punjab Government must sell canal water for five paisa per litre, share fifty paisa per litre with the transit state for development of the pipeline and compensate the farmer with twenty thousand rupees per acre for not producing rice”, said Johal.Slamming the Congress Government for not being able to live up to the expectations , Johal said that the present government is not using and mobilizing the resources diligently . ” The state is struggling hard to get revenues, but with the implementation of this policy , the state would earn up-to 20-25 thousand crore rupees and within eight to ten years the state will be revenue surplus. He also took a dig on Central Cabinet’s decision of issuing 2.11 lakh crore rupees for recapitalization of the public banks. ” Banks are meant to make profits, How can banks be in loss?, Banks work on target oriented sales theory which increases the NPA and the banks suffer losses but recapitalization is no solution”, said Johal.
