Stubble burning severely damaged Amritsar AQI. Despite the fact that the cracker usage was less this time because of the restrictions imposed by Punjab and Haryana High Court, the burning of paddy straw in the ongoing peak paddy harvest season did the damage to atmosphere in Amritsar district. The mean Air Quality Index (AQI) of Punjab, as per data released by Punjab Pollution Control Board, was 328 this Diwali day with Amritsar’s AQI recorded as 287 which is considered to be poor air quality. The air pollution level in Punjab this Diwali was 43.4 per cent more as compared to last year’s Diwali. The analysis of air quality data of Punjab during Diwali night shows that level of Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) in the air this year has been higher than the last year because of low level of air dispersion due to very low wind velocity and early harvesting of paddy crop.
