Ferozepur : Farmers opting to grow vegetables are going through testing times. After potato glut and sharp fall in prices, farmers who planted peas are staring at mammoth loss. The rate of peas has fallen to such an extent that recovering input costs seems impossible.
The rates of green peas have slashed down to Rs 300 per kg in whole sale market.A farmer from Talwandi Jalle Khan in Zira sub division committed suicide after the decline in the rates of green peas. The deceased has been identified as Sucha Singh (40years). Kuldeep Kaur the wife of Singh said that his husband was under debt of Rs 12 lakh and had sold his own land and took the land on lease.
Singh grew potatoes on the leased land and suffered heavy loss earlier and green peas just broke him down financially. The Krantikari Kissan Union warned that they will not conduct the cremation of farmer till the government announces compensation to aggrieved family.
