Nathana Police station is dotted with the nests of black sparrows but the cops, believing in the power of these birds, don’t even even think of removing them.
Nathana police station in Bathinda district is full of nests of black sparrows but hardly any of the cops even think about removing them. One may be surprised to know, the cops at the police station rather pay obeisance to them, carrying a strong belief that these sparrows are not any common bird but having extraordinary powers blessed by deity. Visiting the police station, Daily Post found the corridor covered by these nests. On being asked, the policemen present there said, “These are not common sparrows but have some supernatural powers. So we don’t even think about removing their nests.” Speaking further, the cops claimed that one thing that was quite surprising for them also was that if any of the sparrows touched the floor, it died within a short span. Otherwise, they claimed that all these sparrows leave their nests in the morning and without touching any object in the police station few to get the feed for their infants waiting in the nests. The second time they are seen coming out of their habitation is evening. The cops added that they never saw any of these sparrows drinking water or eating something, as they tried so for numerous times as a gesture of care. Divulging further, about the myth related to their supernatural powers, the cops claimed: “Once an SHO, couple of years back, had attempted to remove the nests claiming that these were disgracing the look of the police station. He could remove just few of them and started feeling giddy. The next morning he told us that the night was nightmarish for him as he kept on feeling the sparrows were pricking in his eyes,” said Santri (cop posted at the entrance) who claimed to be stationed at the police station for past couple of years. Asked about further details of sparrows, the cops said there was one Baba Kalu ji in Nathana, in his whose remembrance some Melas (fairs) are also organised there, who had blessed these sparrows. “Paying obeisance to these sparrows, we feel we are paying obeisance to Baba Kalu ji,” claimed a number of cops. Their viewpoint was also endorsed by people located in the surroundings of the police station. Some natives also claimed to have read the mention about these birds and nests in history books. A 60-year-old resident, Bhagwan Dass Garg said: “It’s not only about cops posted in the police station, we too carry a strong belief about these sparrows that there is some supernatural power that vests in them. So, we the residents of this town also pay obeisance to these birds, whenever visit the police station.”
