SYL canal issue: Once again the issue of Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal is all set to rock Punjab and Haryana. Both states had sought two months’ time from the Supreme Court to settle the issue amicably.
After the last hearing on July 11, the next hearing in the Supreme Court is scheduled for September 7. Only eight days are left and out of these, two days, that is September 2 and 3 are holidays. Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh will proceed for foreign travel from September 5 to 25. And to add to this, no one has been able to hold a meeting on this matter till now.Supreme Court had ordered Punjab for the construction of the link canal. During a hearing in the Supreme Court on July 11, senior counsel A K Ganguly had said that the Prime Minister has called a meeting of Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana in this regard. On this basis, the Attorney General of Haryana had appealed to the Supreme Court for two months’ time to arrive at an amicable solution.
The Supreme Court had said that the next hearing of the case will be held on September 7.Meanwhile, both the states had been asked to hold a meeting on this issue. Following this, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had issued a statement urging the Punjab Chief Minister to expedite the work of construction of link canal. Also, Punjab Chief Minister had thanked the Supreme Court for two months’ time and had requested the Centre to arrange a meeting of both the states. Although for the last one week, Punjab and Haryana had been facing the Dera supporters’ ire, but even before that, both the states were not able to hold a meeting on the link canal issue.
