Ludhiana: Harkirat Singh, sarpanch of Kotli village and grandson of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, was cremated at the village which he had got constructed last year. Thousands of people from all walks of society turned up to pay their last respects. Harkirat had died of bullet injury in Chandigarh on Sunday. Being a sarpanch, he had contributed a lot for the development of the village, said a villager while remembering his beloved leader.
Earlier, there was no boundary wall, shed and sitting arrangement at the cremation ground of the village but Harkirat took the initiative and got these constructed, said Amandeep Singh, who knew Harkirat for quite some time. The villagers remember him for his concern for the environment and say that he had got saplings planted in the village. The undergoing sewerage project, solar lights and well-developed road infrastructure was aso got done by him. Harkirat had been elected sarpanch unanimously in 2013. He had also played a vital role in the poll campaign of MP Ravneet Bittu in Anandpur Sahib constituency and Gurkirat Singh Kotli in Khanna.
The family members maintained that after the death of Beant Singh Harkirat was in depression and undergoing treatment. Harkirat had recovered, however, last year he again developed some problem after his road accident in Mohali. The family members, friends and villagers were inconsolable during the cremation. The CLP leader, Charanjit Singh Channi, senior Congress leader Lal Singh, Jagbir Brar, MLAs Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Surinder Dawar, Amrik Singh Dhillon, Kuljit Singh Nagra, Ludhiana Congress pPresident Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, IG, Patiala Range, Paramraj Singh Umranangal, Ludhiana Youth Congress president Rajiv Raja, vice-president Sunny Kainth were among those present at the cremation.
