A 16-year-old girl suffered burn injuries on her face after a “relative” — said to be incensed over her mother not repaying a loan — threw petrol at her that caught fire from a stove at her house in Thakur Nagar here on Thursday evening. He was arrested.
Police earlier had said the victim, Komal Preet, a Class-12 student, was attacked by Hardeep Singh, 35, of Hoshiarpur, with “acid” when she was making tea in the house kitchen. The doctors later clarified that she had got burn injuries from the fire spurred by petrol.
“Following her mother’s statement and the burn injuries, it looked like an acid attack. But it got clear after doctor’s reports and the confession by [Hardeep], “ said superintendent of police (headquarters) Jaskiranjit Singh Teja. The inquiry officer, deputy SP Gurmeet Singh, said Hardeep is “a close relative” of the family, but more detail on the relationship was not available. “The victim’s mother had borrowed Rs 7 lakh from him a few years back, and he had approached the family several times to get his money back.
On Thursday, he attempted to attack the mother, Manpreet Kaur, but she somehow escaped the attack and the girl suffered serious burn injuries.” He said a case was yet to be registered and the victim was undergoing treatment at the local civil hospital. Hindustan Times
