SYL canal issue
Patiala: With tension mounting due to Indian National Lok Dal (INLD)’s call about digging of Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal on February 23 in this bordering district with Haryana, the district administration has started taking preventive measures to foil any such move and police patrolling has been intensified and force put on maximum alert as well.

Meanwhile, All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) on Monday urged the Union government to intervene into the matter so that peace be protected in this bordering state and also asked the Punjab and Haryana High Court to intervene and order the immediate cancellation of parole granted to former Haryana Chief Minister and mentor of INLD Om Parkash Chautala as his party was trying to disrupt the hard-won peace in Punjab by exploiting the issue concerning the SYL.
AISSF president Karnail Singh Peermohammad in a statement issued here said that Chautala got parole on February 1 and after that, his son and senior leader of the party Abhay Chautala announced the programme regarding digging of SYL and called upon poor people of Haryana to gather in Ismailpur to march towards Punjab to start digging work on SYL as Haryana had full share in SYL waters and he would bring water to Haryana.
He said that such statements were dangerous and if not checked in time, then it will disturb the peace in Punjab and announced that in view of the situation, they were determined not to allow any such move come what may.
Taking a dig at Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, SAD supremo Sukhbir Singh Badal and AAP’s National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s silence over the issue, he said that during election time all these leaders utilised this issue just with an aim to get votes but with the elections over now they seemed to have dumped the issue. He reminded all that during the 80’s, it was the Sikhs of Punjab who had fought for the issue of SYL and made supreme sacrifices for it just to protect the interests of the state and now again seemed that again the ball is put in their court but the Sikhs are ready to thwart any move to take state’s river waters and they are not going to allow anybody to play with the peace of the state.
At ground zero, during the tour of Shamhu and Ghanour areas bordering Haryana especially Kapoori village, where the foundation stone for the construction of SYL Canal was laid by the-then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1982, it was found out that an old bridge near to Shambhu has been blocked to check any attempt to cross over through such route and the police personnel were seen putting up barricades near to the national highway and other road links and even the sand-filled jute bags were also brought near the checking points.
But in Kapoori village, things were found to be peaceful and the people also were not seen to be panicky because of INLD’s threat and most of them termed it to be a political gimmick of INLD and stated that corrupt INLD leadership was trying to get some kind of political mileage out of the issue of SYL.
Interestingly, as per inputs, lower level police personnel of both the states are interacting over the issue with each other and are gearing up to thwart the march on February 23, It has been learnt that police chiefs of both Patiala in Punjab and Ambala in Haryana are expected to meet on Tuesday to discuss and oversee the security preparations at both ends to meet the challenge from INLD.
