The fuming agitators also damaged a police vehicle in the brawl. Some unconfirmed reports also suggested that police had to open fire in the air to control the violent mob.
Police have rounded up over twelve agitators from the spot and registered a case under Sections 107/151 of the CrPC. The police were also working on identification of the main persons who assaulted the policemen in order to book them. According to information, Amandeep Kaur of Dhanaula village in Barnala district was married to a man of Sidhana village in Rampura Phul subdivision.
The woman was five-month pregnant when she consumed some poisonous substance a few days back and ended her life at her in-laws’ house. The agitators, raising anti-police slogans, blocked the main road outside the police station. Holding parleys, the civil and police officials managed to convince them to lift the dharna but after finding that administration was non-serious over the issue, the agitators then moved towards the Rampura railway crossing to block the road and rail traffic. Sensing the situation, the police intercepted them on the way and the situation turned tense.
To disperse the protesters, the police resorted to lathicharge and the agitator, who had come in tractor-trolleys also attacked the cops with stones and bricks. They also damaged a police vehicle during the melee. Meanwhile, the senior officials sent additional force to the spot and under the headship of DSP Gurjit Singh Romana, the cops detained several protesters.
