Malerkotla: The Sangrur police on Tuesday arrested three persons on the charge of sacrilege of the Quran here which took place on June 24. They have also recovered a vehicle used by them during the incident and the lighter with the help of which the cover notes of the holy book were set on fire by them. A case under Sections 295 and 120-B of the IPC was already registered against unknown persons on June 25. The IGP, Patiala Zone 1, Paramraj Singh Umranangal in a press conference organised here said that the police had arrested the mastermind of the incident, Vijay Kumar of Bhiwani Road, Jind, along with Nand Kishore of Pathankot and his son Gorav.
All accused were arrested during a special naka laid at the canal bridge near Ghalaudi Gate, Patiala. According to Umranangal, all accused were trying to escape from Punjab in their jeep towards Delhi when the police got a tip-off regarding them and they were nabbed. He said the accused had done the recce of the incident site before committing the crime. He said they planned the incident and entered Malerkotla on June 24 and parked their vehicle at Salim parking stand, Sirhindi Gate. They reached the site, tore pages of the holy book and strewn these all over the place and then fled in their jeep.
Muslim leaders of Malerkotla welcomed the arrest of all accused responsible for the sacrilege of the Quran. Muslim Sikh Front leaders protest against false case against their leaders Mufti-e-Punjab Ertiqa -Ul-Hassan while talking to Daily Post welcomed the action. While congratulating the police on its achievement he demanded strict punishment to the accused. He appealed to the Muslims not to stage any protest as now the police have arrested all accused involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, Muslim Sikh Front of Punjab organised a protest at Sirhindi Gate against the name of three front leaders in the FIR registered in connection with the attack on the house of local MLA Farzana Alam and Wakf board chairman Izhar Alam. Shehzad Hussain, chairman of the front, who was booked by police while addressing the gathering demanded a high-level probe into the incident. He said they were busy burying the Quran at Baba Bodle Sahib graveyard when the attack on the house of Farzana and Izhar Alam occurred. He said the police have falsely implicated them in the FIR to diverge the attention of Muslims from the main issue of sacrilege. DSP Malerkotla Randhir Singh assured the front leaders that nothing wrong would be allowed to happen and at the same time culprits would not be spared. The members of the Front also handed over a memorandum to the DSP in this regard.
